‘Journal of Korean Geriatric Psychiatry (J Korean Geriatr Psychiatry)’ aims to contribute to the academic development of geriatric psychiatry by publishing research that comprehensively covers geriatric psychiatry and related interdisciplinary fields, thereby enhancing readers' basic and clinical knowledge and research capabilities.
Established in 1997 as the official academic journal of the Korean Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (ISBN 1226-6329, eISSN 2733-4600), this journal is published twice a year (April 30th and October 31st) as a peer-reviewed open-access publication. Since 2015, it has been registered as a KCI (Korea Citation Index) and a Korea Research Foundation listed journal.
Types of manuscripts accepted include original articles, review articles, special articles, case reports, editorials, and letters to the editor. The submission guidelines for this journal follow the requirements set forth in the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (Ann Intern Med 1997; 126:36-47).
2. Review process and acceptance of manuscriptsThe editor-in-chief first conducts an initial review of the manuscript according to the submission guidelines. If the manuscript meets the primary criteria, a registration number is assigned and the author is notified of the completion of submission. If the manuscript does not fulfill primary criteria or submission guidelines, it will be returned to the author without undergoing a full review process.
The submitted manuscript is reviewed by two or more reviewers in the relevant field depending on the type of manuscript, and the review processes are conducted in accordance with the 'Journal of Korean Geriatric Psychiatry Manuscript Review Guidelines'
Review criteria include the originality of the research, the significance of the research results, the academic meaning and impact in the relevant field, the clarity of the research, and adherence to medical ethics. Reviewers are anonymous during the review process. Information about the author may be disclosed to the reviewers during the review process. If a reviewer deems a manuscript inappropriate due to a personal conflict of interest, the reviewer must inform the editor-in-chief.
The decision to publish a manuscript is made by the editorial board after manuscript review, and manuscripts that do not comply with these guidelines may be recommended for revision, held for publication, or rejected. If necessary, the editorial board may make minor revisions within the scope that does not affect the original content, according to the editorial policy.
If there are issues that may compromise the authority of the Journal of Korean Geriatric Psychiatry such as duplicate publication or data manipulation even after publication, the publication will be canceled and the fact will be disclosed in the journal without the author's consent or explanation.
3. Authorship & Conflict of Interest- Authorship and Author’s Responsibility
Manuscripts should be submitted by individuals recognized by the Korean Association for Geriatric Psychiatry and the Korean Neuropsychiatric Association, as well as the editorial board. At least one author must assume comprehensive responsibility as a corresponding author for the conception and design of the study, data acquisition, progress of the research, and the manuscript's content and publication. The first author should contribute significantly to the research process and take the lead in writing a substantial part of the manuscript. Each author should have participated in the research enough to take public responsibility for the content of the research and should meet the following three criteria:
Contributions such as merely procuring research funds, general supervision and guidance of researchers, and mechanical data collection do not qualify an author and can only be acknowledged in the acknowledgment section.
- Financial support and conflict of interest
When there is financial support for the research, the funding source must be disclosed, and if there is potential conflict of interest related to the subject matter of the manuscript or any special economic benefits, it should be stated on the cover of the manuscript.
- Secondary publication
This journal recommends secondary publication for scientific communication. In cases where a paper published in this journal of Korean language could be published in other language journal or vice versa. Secondary publication for various other reasons may also be justifiable provided the following conditions are met: 1. The authors have received approval from the editors of both journals (the editor concerned with secondary publication must have access to the primary version). 2. The priority of the primary publication is respected by a publication interval negotiated by both editors with the authors. 3. The paper for secondary publication is intended for a different group of readers; an abbreviated version could be sufficient. 4. The secondary version faithfully reflects the authors, data, and interpretations of the primary version. 5. The secondary version informs readers, peers, and documenting agencies that the paper has been published in whole or in part elsewhere—for example, with a note that might read, “This article is based on a study first reported in the [journal title, with full reference]”—and the secondary version cites the primary version. 6. The title of the secondary publication should indicate that it is a secondary publication (complete or abridged republication or translation) of a primary publication. Such secondary publication is only permissible if it adheres to the ICMJE Recommendations (http://www.icmje.org/urm_main.html, https://www.kjme.kr/authors/authors.php) and the Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors (KAMJE) guidelines for publication ethics in the 3rd edition of "Acceptable Secondary Publication" (https://www.kamje.or.kr/board/lists?b_name=bo_publication). Of note, the NLM does not consider translations to be “republications” and does not cite or index them when the original article was published in a journal that is indexed in MEDLINE. When the same journal simultaneously publishes an article in multiple languages, the MEDLINE citation will note the multiple languages (e.g., Angelo M. Journal networking in nursing: a challenge to be shared. Rev Esc Enferm USP. 2011 Dec 45[6]:1281-2,1279-80,1283-4. Article in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. No abstract available. PMID: 22241182) But, duplicate and redundant publications are prohibited in principle.
4. Ethics Regulations for Research and PublicationAll matters related to research ethics, including ethical regulations, plagiarism, duplicate publication, and research misconduct, are subject to review and processing procedures according to the Ethics Regulations of the Korean Association for Geriatric Psychiatry. Any matters not specified in the Ethics Regulations of the Korean Association for Geriatric Psychiatry shall be subject to the " Good Publication Practice Guideline for Medical Journals " established by the Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors.
Patient identifying information such as name, Korean and English initials, and medical record number cannot be published in any form. However, if patient identifying information is essential scientific information, the patient, parent or legal guardian must be informed and a written consent form must be obtained before publication. When submitting photos related to the patient, patient identification must be kept confidential. If there is any possibility that patient identification may be exposed, the manuscript must indicate that consent has been obtained for this. If the subject of the research is human, according to the Declaration of Helsinki, the purpose of the research and potential mental or physical harm that may occur during the research must be fully explained to the participant or their legal guardian. The content of the written informed consent obtained from the participant or their legal guardian and the approval of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the research institution, including the approval number, must be stated in the "Subjects and Methods" section of the manuscript. All clinical trials must be required to obtain approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB), and to register the http://www.clincaltrials.gov or any of the World Health Organization (WHO) primary trial registries. The approval number from the IRB and the registration number of the clinical trial registration must be stated in the "Subjects and Methods" section of the manuscript. Clinical trial registration can be done through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) ClinicalTrials.gov website (http://www.clinicaltrials.gov) or the Clinical Research Information Service (CRIS) (https://cris.nih.go.kr/cris/index/index.do). If the subject of the research is animals (mammals and birds), it must be clearly stated that the experiment was approved in advance by the IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) of the institution established under Article 14 of the Animal Protection Act or a committee of equal qualification. All animal experimentation procedures described in the paper must be carried out in compliance with the relevant regulations, such as Article 13 (Principles of Animal Experimentation) of the Animal Protection Act, and the approval of the institution's committee must be stated in the "Subjects and Methods" section of the manuscript. If requested by the editor, approval letters from the institutional review board (IRB) and animal ethics committee must be submitted.
5. Copyright and Publication MaterialsAll copyrights related to the content, tables, and figures of the paper belong to the Korean Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (KAGP), and all authors must submit their consent to this in writing according to the designated format upon submission of the manuscript. There are no fees for manuscript submission, review, and publication. In order to transfer copyright, all authors must submit a signed "Consent to Publish" form agreeing to the transfer of copyright. 6. Manuscript Content and Format1) General principles
- Manuscripts should be written in Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx) format on a Windows-based computer, with paper size set to A4 (210×297 mm). The text should be aligned to the left with a font size of 12 points, and the line spacing should be set to 200% (double space). The left, right, and bottom margins should be 3 cm, and the top margin should be 3.5 cm. The length of the main text, from the introduction to the summary, should be around 10 pages. If additional pages are needed, the editorial office should be notified. All manuscripts should be numbered consecutively starting from the cover page, and author names or affiliations should not be included in the manuscript after the abstract.
- The manuscript should be written in either Korean or English, and medical terms should follow the medical terminology listed on the website of the Korean Medical Association or the terminology dictionary published by the Korean Neuropsychiatric Association. For terms not found in these sources, refer to the 6th edition (2009-2020) of the medical terminology dictionary published by the Korean Medical Association. For manuscripts written in Korean, Chinese characters can be used in combination. If there are no appropriate translations available for medical terms, proper nouns, drug names, units, etc., the original terms will be used as is. If a translation is available but the meaning is not clear, the original term is first written in parentheses next to the translated term when it first appears, and only the translated term is used thereafter. English abbreviations are minimized and the original term is written out followed by the abbreviation in parentheses the first time it is used. Length, height, weight, and volume measurements are recorded in metric units, and temperature is recorded in Celsius. Hematological or clinical chemical measurements are made using the International System of Units (SI) in metric units (JAMA 1986;255:2329-39).
- Sample papers and endnote styles for writing papers are provided as files on the website journal.kagp.or.kr.
2) Contents of the manuscript
- The manuscript should be arranged in the following order:
Title page - Abstract - Introduction - Subjects and Methods - Results - Discussion - Acknowledgments - Funding - References - Tables and Figures - Legends for tables and figures.
- In case of a review article, the subjects and methods, and results sections may be omitted depending on the content of the manuscript.
- English abbreviations should be minimized and spelled out in full followed by the abbreviation in parentheses at its first use. (For example, after writing Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC) once, it can be used as RDC in subsequent usage.)
-The ingredient names of drugs should be written in English as a principle. In the case where there is a domestic product name, it is also acceptable to write it in Korean. However, when the same drug name is repeated, the Korean product name can be used after the initial mention, followed by the English name in parentheses, and then the Korean product name can be used for all subsequent mentions. The detailed examples can be found in the submission guidelines in Korean.
(1) Cover page
The manuscript cover page consists of a cover and an inside cover. The cover should include the following:
-A concise Korean and English title that effectively conveys the content. If the number of words in the title exceeds 25 Korean characters (including spaces) or 10 English words, a running title must be added.
-The names of all authors, the name of their affiliated institution, and their positions must be provided in both Korean and English. Final degrees should be listed in English only. If authors from different affiliations are included, the author's name should be followed by a non-parenthetical shoulder number, and affiliations should be listed in numerical order. If a minor author has no current affiliation, their final affiliation, position, and year of enrollment should be listed. The author responsible for communication regarding the manuscript, including their name, address, fax number, and email address, should also be provided.
-If the same content has been presented at a previous academic conference, the date and name of the conference should be included.
-Research funds, equipment used in experiments, suppliers of drugs, and other forms of sponsorship
-Running title
-The inside cover should include only the title of the manuscript in Korean and English in order to ensure fairness in the manuscript review process. Author names, affiliations, and other information should not be included.
(2) Abstract and Keywords
-The abstract should be written in English within 200 words. For original articles, it should be structured into Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusion. For review articles and case reports, it should be unstructured. The abstract should include the purpose of the study, basic research methods (study subjects or animals used, observation and analysis methods), important findings (presentation of specific data and, if possible, examination of their statistical significance), and significant conclusions. Novel and important findings in the research or observation should be emphasized. The paper's keywords (central words, key words, or key phrases) should be listed below the abstract, with 3-10 words.
-The keywords should use medical subject headings (MeSH) listed in the Index Medicus. For recent concepts or terms that do not have appropriate words in the recent edition of the Medical Subject Headings, authors can provide the terms they have used.
(3) Introduction
The introduction should mention the objective of the paper and summarize the basis of the research or observation. Only relevant references should be strictly selected and listed. The introduction should not include any data or conclusions of the paper.
(4) Subjects and Methods
-The method of selecting the subjects or experimental subjects (patients, experimental animals and control groups) should be clearly described.
-The age, gender, and other important characteristics of the subjects should be indicated.
-If the subject of the study is a human, in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki, the manuscript should state that the subjects were adequately informed of the purpose of the study and the potential mental and physical harm that could arise from participating in the study, and written informed consent was obtained from the subjects or their guardians.
-When reporting the results of studies involving human subjects, after describing the inclusion and exclusion criteria in the Subjects and Methods section, sufficient explanation should be provided to the study participants, followed by a mention of obtaining written informed consent. In the final paragraph, the Ethics Statement should include the approval and number of the Institutional Review Board (IRB), the clinical trial registration number (such as clinicaltrials.gov or CRIS), and other related information.
-When reporting the results of studies involving human subjects, it is necessary to describe the written informed consent obtained from the study participants, after providing sufficient explanation, following the inclusion and exclusion criteria in the Subjects and Methods section. In the last paragraph, it is necessary to describe the content related to Ethics Statement, such as the approval number of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the research institution, clinical trial registration number (such as clinicaltrials.gov or CRIS), etc. When reporting results of research involving human subjects, the mention of "written informed consent obtained after sufficient explanation provided to research participants" should be described after the criteria for inclusion and exclusion of subjects and methods, followed by the content of Ethics Statement, including the approval and number of Institutional Review Board (IRB), clinical trial registration number (such as clinicaltrials.gov or CRIS), etc.
-When the subject of research is animals, the measures taken to reduce pain and discomfort of experimental animals should be presented, and it should be indicated whether the experimental process complied with regulations or laws of the institutional review board for clinical trials or national research committees. The type, dose, and administration route of drugs administered to experimental animals and the method of operation should be described in detail.
-The experimental (or observational) methods, devices, or instruments (including the name and address of the manufacturer in parentheses) and the experimental process should be recorded in detail so that other researchers can reproduce the results. For well-known methods, reference should be made to the literature. For published but less well-known methods, reference should be made and briefly described. If a new method is used or if a method is used that has been modified to the extent that it can be considered new, the reasons for using that method and the limitations of that method should be evaluated. All drugs and chemicals used should be specified, including their generic names, doses, and administration methods.
-The correct use of the terms "sex" (biological factors) and "gender" (identity, psycho-social, or cultural factors) should be verified, and if appropriate, the sex and gender of the study participants, animals, or cells should be reported, and the methods used to determine sex should be described. For example, if a study includes an exclusive group of one sex, the author must provide a valid reason for this, except in clear cases (e.g., prostate cancer). The author should define how race or ethnicity was determined and justify its relevance. For case reports, a subtitle should be added as "Case Report" instead of "Subjects and Methods" and "Results".
(5) Results
-The results of the study are presented in a logical order using text, tables, and figures. All the data in the tables or figures should not be repeated in the text. Only the important findings observed should be emphasized or summarized.
(6) Discussion
-Emphasize the novelty and significance of the study, as well as the conclusions drawn from the results. Do not repeat the research data described in the Introduction or Results section. The discussion section should include the meaning of the research findings, the limitations of that meaning, and the impact on future research. Compare the results with those of other similar studies.
(7) Acknowledgments
When mentioning a person's name in the acknowledgments section, their consent must be obtained. All authors must disclose any conflicts of interest. Conflict of interest refers to financial or personal relationships that may have an inappropriate influence on the behavior of authors, author-affiliated institutions, peer reviewers, or editors. For example, 1) financial relationships (employment, consultation, stock ownership, honoraria, expert testimony), 2) personal relationships, 3) academic competition, 4) intellectual ambition. These conflicts of interest should be described in the acknowledgments section. In addition, all authors are required to submit the ICMJE Form for Disclosure of Potential Conflicts of Interest. The form is provided as a file on the journal.kagp.or.kr website.
(8) Funding: If the research was financially supported, it should be disclosed.
(9) Data Sharing Statement:
The aim of the journal is to expand clinical and scientific knowledge. We recognize that one facet of this goal would include sharing of author’s data upon request, and this may be a requirement of your funding body or institution. To foster transparency, we encourage authors to state the availability of their data in a Data Sharing Statement, which should appear just before the reference section of the manuscript. In this paragraph, authors can inform the readers how they may access the data. If your data are unavailable to access or unsuitable to post, you may indicate the reason why in your Data Sharing Statement. For more information visit Elsevier’s Data Statement page (https://www.elsevier.com/authors/tools-and-resources/research-data/data-statement).
(10) References
- Only those cited in the main manuscript should be included, and the total number of references should be no more than 50 (except in the case of a review article). References to papers from the Journal of Korean Geriatric Psychiatry should be included extensively.
-In the main manuscript, references should be numbered in the order they appear, using superscript numbers separated by commas (without spaces). When three or more consecutive numbers are used, a hyphen should be used to indicate the range. References should be cited immediately following any punctuation mark (comma or period). For multiple citations of the same author in the same sentence, they should be listed in chronological order, while references from different authors should be listed alphabetically.
-For references with up to two authors, all authors' names should be listed. For references with three or more authors, only the first author's name should be listed, followed by "et al."
-References used solely for tables and figure captions should be listed in the order they appear in the main manuscript.
-No references should be included in the abstract.
-An EndNote style for formatting references is available on the journal's website (journal.kagp.or.kr).
-Citation format in “references”
(a) The citation style in references follows the format of "Author. Article title. Journal name Year;Volume:Start page-End page."
(b) The first letter of the title of the cited article should be capitalized. If there is a subtitle, it should be written in lowercase with a colon (:) between the title and subtitle. The year should be indicated followed by a semicolon (;) to separate it from the volume and page numbers, which should be written in the format of "Volume:Start page-End page."
(c) If there are six or fewer authors, all of them should be listed. If there are more than six authors, the first six should be listed followed by "et al." Last names of all authors should be written in full, while the first and middle names should be abbreviated with only the first letter capitalized and no period (.) after the initials.
